Every year around Memorial Day, the city of Virginia Beach, VA plays host to the annual Pungo Strawberry Festival. And every year, the high school students of the local Advanced Technology Center's Digital Design class are commissioned to do the poster design for the festival. In 2008, my class was that class. The theme of the festival that particular year was a very special one. That year was the 25th anniversary of the festival. Another aspect of the theme came about from the fact that Virginia Beach is a town populated by 3 military bases within. From these considerations, theme arose. "Celebrating 25 Years of Freedom, Family, and Fun" was what we had to work with. The below was what I came up with. After my class figured out all of their individual designs, the work was juried by the festival board. My design was voted second place. Apparently, there was a verbal brawl about the poster design that won and my own piece. The board was almost at a stalemate. But the other design won, but a lady on the board loved my design so much that she wanted to by the piece from me. She was my first paying client and in turn made this my first paid piece.
