For my printmaking class we had to make a screen print regarding the
idea that "public" and "private" places don't really exist in the way
we think they do. I decided to do my project on the South African
apartheid because there was no public space at all. Everyone was
divided. Families were divided. And that's the par...t
that gets to me. These African people were separated based on their
skin color and sent to live in different places from their brothers,
sisters, and parents. It makes me think... my mom has lots of freckles,
and I tan well. We would be separated. That's scary, and that is
something that was real to these people. I put the image on shirts
because I want people to wear this young girl the way this young girl
had to wear her identity as a number. I put them on people I love
because if I were her, I would never get to see these people. We would
be separate. We are lucky in America. Even if college is expensive and
jobs are sparse. At least we belong to our families. Be thankful that
you are allowed to be near who you want. Its a fucking gift.
Image on shirt was designed and printed by yours truly.
