STOP! CHILDREN’S CANCER, INC. is a local non-profit organization committed to the prevention, control and cure of cancer in children. Since its founding in 1981 by the Freeman family, it has been locally managed and dedicated to raising funds for basic research, research scholars, and research equipment for the Divisions of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
I was lucky enough to participate in helping to design my version of a poster for the 2010 Fantasy Event. This event is a fundraising event which is held annually to help support the organization. I took a real chance experimenting with techniques I've never used before. I wanted to stand out from the rest of my classmates, which were bound to do the tried and true approach to the general themes of Polynesia.
First employing actual watercolors and pen & ink, I then digitized those elements and combined them in Adobe InDesign. I worked hard to keep in tact the clarity of the information while keeping it visually interesting. This was a real exercise in typography, visual hierarchy, texture, and the use of traditional illustration techniques in an ultimately digitial creation process.
Although my design was not ultimately chosen for use, it did garner praise and attention from the organizer of the "Polynesian Paradise" event, as well as my peers.
