  • The theme of unrequited love has inspired many authors across centuries. The story of star crossed lovers in literature is an infiniteloop of tragedy.

    The Highway Man is a classic tragic story of forbiddenlove between implausible lovers with all the formulaic elements of jealousy,betrayal and ultimately, loss.


    Set in 18th century England, it tells the story of a beautiful maidennamed Bess, the daughter of a landlord who is in love with the highway man.They are betrayed to the authorities by Tim, the stableman who desires Bess forhimself and wishes the highwayman dead.The King George’s men come to the old inn at night, tying Bess up andpropping her at the window in a bid to lure the highway man in and capture him.Bess sacrifices her life to warn him and he escapes. However upon hearing abouther death, he attempts to avenge his loss and is shot dead in the processmaking her sacrifice in vain.
