Plastic landscape

This is my sewing piece, measuring 25" by 40". It is made by melting plastic bags, either found or painted, which was then cut to fit like a puzzle. They are then sewn together.
Above: The effect when it is placed in front of a light table.

INSPIRATION:
My collage is based on Gordon Harrison's "Journee d'Hiver Collection 2" oil painting. I simplified this composition into blocks of colour, and tried to mimic his use of colour in my piece.
In the process of creation, I discovered the magnificent effect that light has on the plastic sheets. All the folds and creases that resulted from the melting process became visible in front of a light box.
As a month long project, the process involved research, imagination and experimentation. This piece developed with the intention of conveying the tension and balance between mass-production and craftsmanship. As a successful landscape artist based in Ottawa, Harrison produces many versions of the same painting each season using the same colour pallette but in different sizes. I was fascinated by his practice because he blurs the boundary between fine arts and mass produced art. I tried to explore the relation between these two ideas in my project.
