Predicting the Future Trying to see in to the future explains why we are tricked by optical illusions. Illusions occur when our brains attempt to perceive the future, and those perceptions don't match reality. Mental images differ from retinal projections, because the human mind tries to compensate visual illusions and faulty images are corrected by an unconscious judgment based on the facts available to the observer.
