Picket Mead Residences

  • Picket Mead Residences
    Newton - South Wales
  • Hyde + Hyde Architects recently submitted the following contemporary residential development to Planning, located in Newton, a small village on the  Gower coast, South Wales.

Four contemporary homes are proposed within the enclosed grounds of an existing ecclesiastical mansion.

The architectural language of the homes has been inspired by practice research into local vernacular typologies found within the conservation area and the wider rural landscape beyond.

Two distinct atmospheres of the site generate a unique response: The first two homes become introverted courtyards and a private world unto themselves.

While the open aspect of the remaining site generates a linear series of confident architectural forms. These respond to the history of the 'kitchen garden grid' of the main mansion and the distant views to the sea beyond.

  • One of four new contemporary homes within a conservation area.
  • The warm material palette at ground floor is predominantly Limestone, timber and glass. Low profile mono-pitch roofs have been introduced to the first floor volumes, reminiscent of the subservient language of agricultural outbuildings; creating a respectful language to the exiting manor house.
  • Picket Mead Residences - Site Plan.
  • Existing Condition at Picket Mead.
  • Picket Mead Residences - Proposed homes discretely concealed behind an historic garden wall.

  • The project has been positively received by the Design Commission For Wales and will achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes rating of 4.
