"Permutations series" is an experimental research on the mathematical properties of an ancient Indian symbol called Sri Yantra ("holy instrument").
A mathematical enigma, the Sri Yantra is constructed with nine interlocking triangles that are aligned to create a whole, symbolically representing "the beauty of the three worlds (Heaven, Earth, Hell)" and also the union of Masculine and Feminine Divine. Together the nine triangles are interlaced in such a way as to form 43 smaller triangles in a web symbolic of the entire cosmos or a womb symbolic of creation. (Wikipedia)
I spent a full month attempting to construct a perfectly aligned Sri Yantra (a mathematical impossibility, as when you move one part, everything else moves). I eventually got lucky and came to design a pretty close model.
Next, I reorganized and animated the Sri Yantra (never revealing it fully) — thanks to the help of @Jeannie Park — an rearranged the compositon around the photograph of a skull I shot (after painting it with seven coats of white).
The presence of the skull is an hommage to 17th century Vanitas paintings.
Finally, I added enigmatic sounds to complete the animation.
Theses permutations will be a small part of an upcoming experimental film project, You Are A Circle, connected with my book (see:
here).
