In 2004, a lark to spice up a plain black guitar set off a series of artistic and entrepreneurial events, launching the business. Raids upon pawn shops, eBay castoffs and scratch-and-dent sales at local music stores netted a slew of canvasses. In little time, Painted Axe attracted the attention of musicians and special event and concert coordinators from Boston to San Francisco.
 
The self-proprietorship is owned and operated by Michael Gauf, a seasoned Internet consultant and former newspaper journalist and publications owner. The business produces original designs and transfers the concepts and ideas of musicians onto their guitars and other instruments, including guitar video game controllers.
