  • Paintaway
    Michael Chase, 2012
  • This series was originally posted on Area of Interest from July 23 until July 30, 2012.

The following text was taken from the official introduction to Paintaway:

"Each piece was made in my kitchen sink using acrylic paint and water on ceramic tile. Pictures were taken with my iPhone and edited on my computer. It took about a month to create the entire series. I was inspired by the textures created by water while washing away drying paint during an unsuccessful attempt at creating a paint splatter for a design I was working on. After that I began to explore new techniques and experiment with different materials every day to come up with new texture and color combinations. When each piece was completed and the image was edited and finalized, the paintings were washed off to be replaced by the next.

Like my previous photographic work, Paintaway revolves around the central theme of impermanence. The flowing water represents the erosion of time and the paint is symbolic of the physical world we live in.

This project was a great experience and gave me new insight into how I look at texture. I’m excited to share Paintaway and I hope you enjoy it!"
