POPKULTURA TRANSFORMACJI
Pop-culture of Transformation is an illustrated lexicon of popular culture from
the period of its rapid flourish in Poland after 1989. A subjective selection
of terms is supplemented with bitter passages written by Marceli Szpak, describing
a generation growing up in new realities of consumption and globalization culture.
That was when this type of culture first emerged in Poland with such intensity;
it has been experienced differently than in Western countries, familiar with popular culture. Its meaning changed completely as well.

Until recently, the 1990s seemed ugly and unfashionable; however, in line with
20-year cycles of culture, one can notice a recurrence of the spirit of that period (its music, fashion, cult items), which allows us to better understand its historical significance in creating attitudes of the generation of current 30-year olds.

The hardcover book, with dimensions of 330x330mm (660x330mm after opening) is meant to resemble a children’s book, dedicated to “big babies” of the transformation generation – today’s 25-35-year olds, who are nostalgic about that decade.
The cover is designed with holographic foil and ORACAL letters, recalling the style of amateurish ads. Hand-drawn, caricatural illustrations, created with limited edition screen printing, and hand-drawn text are designed to give the publication
an independent character. The entire visual side of the project (holographic foil,
UV paint, ORACAL lettering and hand-drawn typography) is directly referencing the visual feel of Poland in the 1990s.
