A highly staged body of work that is cinematic in scope and melodramatic in theme. Exploring Japan's mystery, the husband and wife team hope to create photographs with a sense of quiet unease and melancholy. Drawing inspiration from Japanese art, literature and theater. Giving a nod to 1950s cinema, Edo woodblock prints and erotic imagery of Ero Guro paintings. The level of detail and styling betrays the photographers fashion background. Being outsiders the Formento's hope to express their progressive interpretation and view of Japan. The mix of documentary and cinematic vision conflates reality with fantasy and makes the viewers question what they see each time.
Richeille comes from a graphic design background with a degree from Central St. Martins, London. She handles all the styling, art direction and subtle color palette punctuated with occasional flash of color in each scene. BJ does all the lighting and photography. Both approach each shoot with openness and constant preoccupation with time, memory and loss.
This is the Formento's 2nd major body of work in progress. "Circumstance", their first book published fall of 2013 deals with their personal point of view of Americana.
