"Otos Lumilock" Design Development
My Wee Lantern Owl Stage by Stage
Short tempered little Otos is a Saw Whet Owl with extraordinary abilities of carrying light, dimensional travel (on rare occassion) and flesh tearing 'tickle time' with her talons. Always on sharp lookout (unless distracted by likely prey or a juicy ball of flame) Otos can seem at first an easily irritated and spacey raptor, but she can become a close and diligent companion if given the chance.
What of carrying light? Otos can crystalize and flatten her feathery plump body. Creating sheaths of plumage made of durable glass that shimmers to the flame carried within her hollowed out bulbous head that also doubles as her eyes.
A slight jinx, Lumilock can at inopportune times launch herself (or unsuspecting guests nearby) into another world through a golden light strewn portal through flapping her wings. It is a rare occurrence and it is how she met Shiftre, the character of Allison VanOtterdyk, a friendly stitched up blue doll who can shapeshift and has a knotted past.

Rough Concepts of Otos, was careful not to forget theindented head design to stay true to her model- the Saw Whet Owl.
Midway progress on coloring and finalizing Otos' peculiarpalette. Aim to distinguish Otos from normal Saw Whet Owls. Utilized a green,purple heavy theme, reflecting an October atmosphere. I then changed it to a warmerpalette of sunset colors to better exhibit Otos' abilities to carry lightthrough the darkest night.
Another go at the green design. Honestly the owl looked morelike a carnivorous parrot with a wedged head, or an owl made of leaves. Thoughthe idea of an owl made of leaves is an intriguing, that route was not for thisowl's design.

More Otos play drawing. Currently I'm challenging myself to draw everyday. An illustration a day, ect, to keep my skills sharp. Lesser sketch pages will be uploaded on my blog and my tumblr accounts.
Incorporating a more anthropormorphic form for Otos, figuring out what her height would estimate compared to other people. I used Nott (lower left), another character of my own as a reference point. Otos seems rather tall but I may play a bit more with her proper scaling since Saw Whet's are very small owls, it would make sense for her humanesque counterpart to be short as well.

Then bottom middle is Otos on the shoulder of her best friend Shiftr, a living doll to enjoy watching the moon on a calm cool night.. Shiftr belongs to Allison VanOtterdyk.
