iPhone 4/5, iPad case made from molded paper pulp
To appeal to the “green” conscious consumer, provide adequate protection, and undercut cost and waste. The material qualities of the case should allow for minimal packaging if any.The cost of the case should be low enough that the risks of self-packaging should be negligible (i.e. theft from retail location).
Thermoformed fiber has some of the same qualities as plastics and is of a much higher quality than other molded pulp. This material can be made from 100% recycled paper and is 100% recyclable at the end of the product life cylce.
Requirements for Competitiveness: Case must be easily attached to and detached from the iPhone and iPad without damaging either the case or the device. The shell is water resistant. Case design is informed by the design of the device it is covering.
Manufacturing: Similar to thermoformed food containers. The pulp is molded and heated to dry inside the mold. The pulp can be dyed to desired color before being molded.
Cost: Price per 10 units should be between $0.10 and $1.00 to produce.
