ORPELA CL250
The Orpela CL is part of an autonomous system, one that runs the
port operations by controlling a variety of machines designed for
the loading and unloading of containers and delivering them to
their destination. This control is governed from a tower that can
control 10 Orpela CLs – but this tower is just one of 1,000 that
are controlled from the master tower, which co-ordinates all the
different autonomous machines that handle the cargo.
The towers also act as a base from where these autonomous
flying vehicles can charge their batteries, as these machines rely on
electric engines and electric actuators to adjust the length of the
hold arms to the container size. The Orpela CL will then lift the
container and transfer it to an autonomous road train.
This system will be able to reduce accidents as well as shorten the
time needed to deliver the cargo. Another of its advantages is that
it can be suited to any size of port, and also speed up the unloading
process as, unlike land-based machinery, it does not have to wait
until a ship has berthed.
Once it enters mass production, the manufacturing costs would
become quite reasonable. In fact, a similar use of machines can
be seen in military applications already today. This autonomous
platform could also be used for other purposes such as military,
rescue and forestry, etc.
