1:560 OLYMPIC STADIUM - ATHENS 1896
- Καλλιμάρμαρο......the first modern Olympics stadium down to scale.
- In 2011 I was commissioned by Σ.Ε.Γ.Α.Σ. (Greek Gymnast Association Union) to make a 1:560 scale model of the Kalimarmaro stadium in Athens. It is now used to promote the Athens Classic Marathon at various athletics expo's around the world.From Wiki: The Panathinaiko or Panathenaic Stadium (Greek: Παναθηναϊκό στάδιο), also known as the Kallimarmaro (Καλλιμάρμαρο, i.e. the "beautifully marbled"), Is an athletic stadium in Athens that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Reconstructed from the remains of the ancient Greek stadium, the Panathinaiko is the only major stadium in the world built entirely of white marble (from Mount Penteli) and one of the oldest stadiums in the world.
The stadium is still used for the classic Marathon (as seen in the picture above) and for other cultural and athletic events.

Single strips like the one I'm holding above were glued together
to make the stadium seating and steps.
To make the staircases I used a zona saw to vertically cut the glued strips to size.
The stair-cases and and seats forming three lower deck stadium rows.
The circle cutter is what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom.
Here I'm using it to make curved strips that will be used to make the seating
for the curved part of the stadium.- Again, the strips that were cut in the previous picture are glued together
one on top of the other to form the rows on semicircle side of the stadium. - The four master pieces are ready to be molded withsilicone and then cast out of resin.
- The primed prototypes, ready to be molded.
- Using the resin cast multiples I've now started to build the stadium.
- This beautiful lineup of glues that were used, is missing the hot glue and the tack glue.
- The cyrcles for the logo were punched out of styrene and assembled.
The logo was then molded and cast out of resin for more strength. - Insulation foam and balsa foam used for the hill terrain surrounding the stadium.
The graphic art for the track an field was done with two printed layers.
Graphics artist: Christopher Stratos. - Painting the terrain and blacking up the sides of the model. I've also started to add some trees.
- A wooden cherry trim was used for the base to make the model look classier.
- The building on the bottom right side is the backstage of the stadium. It's connected via an underground tunnel with the track & field.
- The model displayed at the at Maratona di Italia Expo, 2012.
- It's official... The kids loved the model!
