This project is aimed at exploring the applications of modular illustrated typography. Studies were carried out to determine what limits exist when typography becomes illustration and vice versa. Two outcomes were sought in this study: i) the creation of illustrated modular typography, and ii) the evaluation of how such typography is received.
The design process was informed by relevant literature as well as careful observations of successful modular illustrated typography around the world. A case study of 2 particular works by Simon Egli was conducted to better understand how modular typography works. A series of criteria that can help explain the differences and functionality of various modular typographic projects were established and listed. An inhibited process of brainstorming accompanied by the research of illustrated typography and serialization led tothe creation of a typeface based on Stanley Kubrick’s last 7 films. This theme was chosen for the vastness of subject matter that each film discusses, and because Kubrick is my favourite director. In this typeface, elements derived from each film were designed in such away as to establish its atmosphere.
The typeface was then showcased individually to a number of people to explore its potential. The interview participants were six qualified and experienced creative professionals. The choice of the people was based on their subject interest and their professional experience in their field. The interviews were carried out in June 2012. In this qualitative study, participants were exposed to the typeface and asked a series of open-ended questions to induce an environment of discussion.
This study bears particular significance in the traditional use of typography that is characterized by a general adherence to safe design solutions in the design and art scene. This study in fact provides a ground that modular illustrated typography is useful to enhance one’s content with another level of detail by creative professionals. It also provides words with a new level of meaning that could be applied to various sectors such as literature, storytelling, packaging, illustration, branding, and interactive design.
