- Nice Cream
A spec project between the City of Long Beach, CA and the CSULB BFA Graphic Design program.
- Our senior advertising class was assigned a final project that was called "The Long Beach Legacy Project". We were to use our knowledge and skills that we learned from the California State University, Long Beach BFA graphic design program, to give back to the whole Long Beach city community. First we researched and brain stormed to figure out the condition of the city, what it was lacking and where improvements could be made. Research showed that some areas of the city were thriving, while other areas were being neglected. We decided to focus on the neglected areas of the city, and then proceeded to get a closer look at the current situation by physically walking the neighborhoods and interviewing the local residents. The information that we collected showed that each individual had different opinions about their neighborhood, but on average, everyone had mentioned something about the appearance of the sidewalks and streets. If the appearance of the neighborhood was improved somehow, then people would respond in a more positive way. From there, we decided that the presence of litter or trash on the streets was the problem that we wanted to solve.So we then went back to the drawing board, to figure out how we could help clean up the streets. The answer came with the idea of rewarding people for doing their part in helping their community. Thus, we decided to give out free ice cream to those who gave us litter. We called this project "Nice Cream" and our tag line was "kind favors, sweet flavors". The result of this experimental project showed us that it was successful and people did respond positively to what we were trying to accomplish. Looking forward, we knew that this same technique could work for other community services. For example, if you give us canned food, clothing or other donations that could go to help others in the community, we will give you ice cream.
