Proposed as an in fill project in the dense urban context of New York City near Union Square, Newschool Passage is a student hub, fitness center and cafe designed for use by students of the adjacent Parsons Newschool for Design. As a metropolitan campus, the Newschool currently lacks a central common
space for its students.
The design for the center responds to the demands of the long, narrow site, the desire for openness and visual connections between spaces, and the program requirement of being a completely passively controlled temperature management system. The building consists of a series of ribbons, of varying width, vertically offset from one another to aid in passive ventilation and to open sight lines between spaces. The ribbons become not only the floor plates, but also the walls, ceilings, and vertical circulation elements throughout the building.
