This was a second year final major project on the theme of ‘Boundaries’. I looked into neuroligical disorders that had been documented by doctors in medical journals. I read a lot of Oliver Sacks' books to research my content. I looked into famous cases such as that of Kim Peek, a ‘super savant’ with the ability to absorb and remember 98% of every book he has ever read. He can remember locations on a map of a whole city with just one glance. Peek can also read two pages of a book in 8-10 seconds using his right eye to read the right page and his left eye to read the left simultaneously.
I decided to illustrate the disorders by manipulating the text and layout of the Encyclopedia Britannica, the idea being that these disorders are caused by extreme alterations in the brain so I made alterations to a book that teaches about the common brain. Peek scored a below average mark in IQ tests, which led me to explore the negative aspects to these disorders within the book. I highlighted these thoughts by changing sentences so they made different statements such as ‘your brain deceives’, looking at a lot of these cases I found myself thinking a lot of people including myself would desire the abilities presented by these unique individuals.
