The Learning Thermostat
- Until now, thermostats been generic beige boxes that poorly manage what accounts for 50% of a home energy bill. Even programmable thermostats inefficiently manage energy use and are a pain to program. Studies show 90% of people who own programmable thermostats do not even program them.Nest is the first ever smart thermostat. Over time, it learns the patterns of your lifestyle and automatically adjusts the temperature to keep you comfortable while saving energy - which means cutting down your energy bill.
- The form has subtle curves to enhance the ergonomics of turning the temperature ring. The housing curves away from the ring, then perpendicular to the wall. This slight curve is enough to avoid the fingers rubbing on the housing when rotating the main control.
- Nest includes an installation accessory that contains all the bits necessary to get Nest up and running. Instead of throwing any 'ol OEM screwdriver in the box, it was designed to be a beautiful object the user keeps for using around the home.
- This project was done in collaboration with Fred Bould while at Bould Design. Primary contributions were form development and design support, and design of the screwdriver accessory.
