Nerd to Know was the brainchild of one of my best friends, Alex Dello Iacono. NTK is a Youtube series of instructional videos that help explain and provide a five minute or less crash course in a variety of subjects that fit into the nerd stereotype. Alex asked me to help create some of the graphics for the show including the logo.
The logo needed to be fun and flexible to reach into the many aspects of "nerd culture" each part of the logo represents a different feature of some of the most popular aspects of this movement: staff-Fantasy, 3D goggles-movies, Pokéball-anime, Robohand-Sci-fi, katana-Japanese culture, game pad-video games. The typeface is based off of old arcade games.
Nerd to Know also needed a background to fill the frame for pictures that don't quite fill the entire aspect ratio as well as be more visually interesting for some of the text that appears throughout the episode. I decided to create a pattern based off of six pixel art icons that were inspired by my earliest gaming memories, the original GameBoy.
This is the actual pattern that was used. The contrast was lowered to be less obtrusive.
