I tell people that I grew up in a hardware store. A slight exaggeration, but mostly true-- hardware has been a family business for a very long time, and many of my earliest memories involve running up and down aisles next to pipe fittings, hammers, and nail bins. I developed a real love for using tools in my everyday life, and sought to incorporate this into my work as a cast glass artist. I love the idea of creating something elegant and ethereal out of something as rugged and essential as nuts and bolts. Nuts and bolts are all around us holding the world together, and because of this they are often overlooked.. just like glass. Together they make something totally new, and showcase the beauty of both.
Cast glass is creating using the labor and time intensive techniques of mold making, kiln casting and cold working. Photos of my process can be seen here: http://goo.gl/JV53i and here: http://goo.gl/JVgdt
