Natsukashii is a Japanese word most often translated into English as “nostalgia”. However, there is no word in the English language that is comparable to Natsukashii. The word describes the specific feeling one has when meditating on a memory. Further, it is the bitersweet meditation on the past not necessarily as it was, but rather how it is recalled. It expresses a similar sentiment to the Portuguese word “Saudade”; another word expressing a specific emotion for which there is no comparable word in the English language.
This series was somewhat inspired by early wet-plate images. I wanted to visually explore the concept of Natsukashii by creating images which explore themes of hope, loss, regret, love and the sometimes romanticized reflections of pivotal life experiences in the light of Natsukashii.
