According to the brief we were supposed to create aninterior object using the technology of bending wood. I was inspired by themodern automobile shapes and contours, and I decided that the plywood has notbeen enough presented as a material.
I wanted to create the construction as fantastic as possibleor the object that would stand on the edge of today’s technical capabilitiesand at the same time be realizable. As my workshop practice gave me the notionabout the bounds of forming plywood, that is why my item does not seemsimpossible to be realized even for the present technologies. It is even moreinteresting because it somehow challenges technologists and engineers of a hypotheticproducing company. Through combiningrational plywood die-cut and press forms one can result producing the uppercoat of one plate that becomes the working surface of the item.
The inner surface is made of several parts of polishedaluminium connected together. The contrast of two materials - warm and livingplywood having plant origin versus cold inorganic metal which is originallymineral - sets off the features of each of them and creates a fine contrast. Tomake this contrast even more obvious I strengthened it with the light playcaused by a light stripe placed on the inner part of the object. I suggestusing led-lamps will be the most striking solution. The light is powered from the DC and hence there is acable although it is not a problem or disadvantage because now we have a lot ofrilling off devices (similar to those in vacuum cleaners).
One more interesting feature that I see here is apossibility to turn on the backlight when a person sits on the stool - this canbe successfully applied in cafes for example, free sits will be highlighted andthus people can easily find a place for themselves. The shape of the stoolalikes the form of a saddle - a device that through centuries has proved itsergonomics. One will sit on this stool comfortably. The backlight itself can createa kind of mysterious atmosphere that to my mind associates with luminescentmushrooms.
