This Musangwe shoot has been in the making for over a year and a half now. I first came across Musangwe somewhere in the web, I was instantly captivated by the subject matter. From there I set about looking for more information on the web and came up with very little. I was pretty happy that there was not too much info on this age old fighting tradition, as that meant that if I was lucky I could make some pictures that would not have been made.
But then it took me ages to find a contact, one who knew about these fights. A serendipitous encounter with a television journalist led me to a certain Johnny, I was stoked, I finally had a name and a contact number.
Then the calls started, and we made arrangements to meet, that never happened, no need to worry we had a date for the fights, December 2012, I made the necessary contingency plans and moved my holiday.
Disaster struck, the day fight day was cancelled, not postponed but cancelled.
So I left it.......
Then early in 2013 i decided to call my mate Johnny.
Good news there was a fight day coming up. So finally the date was set and we were on, we (my mate Dom and I) had to leave the next day to get to the location, a five hour drive from Johannesburg.
We awoke to a cloudless and beautiful day.
The rest as they say is history. It was a long road to get here but completely worth all the effort and costs. Read Less
