Mother, Tribute to teresa of Calcutta

Mother is a photographic book about the city of Calcutta. It includes several interviews to Mother Teresa and a visual journey to the places where she achieved so much goodness for the country. The author, Mario Pedestá, is a photographer, journalist and war correspondent. He has been travelling around the world for the last thirty years while capturing the worst humanitarian catastrophes with his camera. His experience has given him the opportunity to reflect on his work, a sincere and realistic vision of human cruelty and people’s ability to give everything in exchange for nothing. This book explores these two confronted ideas. It is about those who devote their life to assist terminally ill patients, families that are living in the streets or children that have nothing to play with but a simple plastic bottle and a piece of wire and yet, still have the purest and most beautiful smiles. It is about the chaos of Calcutta, its people, its misery, its ordinary life, its missionaries…
When editing this book, Mario used to say: “There is a great difference between looking and seeing, and that difference translates to commitment. It was a real pleasure and a truthful honor to make the art direction and edit this intimate and astonishing work.
Sadly, Mario died in an accident while he was covering Iraq’s war. On April 14th 2003. We edited this book by the end of 2003 in commemoration to his 30-year career as journalist and independent photographer. In those years, Mario gave us testimony of the unbelievable atrocities of the human condition as well as its opposite side: ¿giving away ‘till it hurts? He always remained independent and never compromised to the interests and views of any media.
During his career as a journalist, he interviewed many great personalities like Indira Gandhi, Richard Nixon, Adi Amin, Mohamed Ali, Yasser Arafat, Hussein of Jordania, Nelson Mandela, Jorge Luis Borges or Salvador Dalí.

Madre es un libro fotográfico sobre la ciudad de Calcuta, algunas entrevistas a Madre Teresa y un recorrido visual por parte de su gran obra en la India. El autor de este libro: Mario Podestá fotógrafo, periodista y corresponsal de guerra que en los últimos 30 años ha recorrido todo el mundo captando con su cámara las mayores catástrofes humanitarias reflejando así una visión muy realista y sincera de la crueldad del ser humano así como también su capacidad de dar por el prójimo todo si es necesario, a cambio de nada, de esta cuestión precisamente aborda este libro. Aquellos que dedican su vida a cuidar de enfermos terminales o familias que están en la calle y niños que sin nada juegan con botellas de plástico entre chorros de agua y te dedican la sonrisa más hermosa y pura! El caos de Calcuta, su gente, la miseria, la vida cotidiana, los hogares de las misioneras de la Caridad.
Al editar este libro junto a Mario el siempre me decía, hay una gran diferencia entre mirar y ver: y esa diferencia compromete! Tuve el placer de realizar la edición del material y la dirección de arte de este personal e increíble proyecto!
Mario murió en un accidente en la guerra de Irak el 14 de Abril de 2003. Este libro lo pudimos editar a finales de ese año en conmemoración a sus más de 30 años como periodista y fotógrafo independiente, que sin casarse con ningún medio de comunicación nos ha acercado una cantidad de documentos gráficos que evidencian lo increíblemente atroz de la condición humana, así como también su lado opuesto: Dar hasta que duela.
Mario en su carrera como periodista ha entrevistado a distintas grandes personalidades entre ellos: Indira Gandhi, Richard Nixon, Adi Amin, Muhamen Alí, Yasser Arafat, Hussein de Jordania, Nelson Mandela, Jorge Luis Borges, Salvador Dalí.
