Morph Water Jugs
Slip-Cast Ceramics

The Task
Design and make a number of the same artistic ceramic water jugs in collaboration with interior design students by applying their patterns and graphics to our jugs.

The Process
There are many steps in designing and making ceramic jugs. Firstly concept sketches were drawn on paper. Refinement sketches were then taken into the computer and rendered in colour. A CAD model was created in order to better understand the form and work out the volumes. From there, foam mock-ups were made to realise the size and proportions, a wooden pattern was then made. Clay was used to create the different mould cavities, and plaster was poured in to make the mould. Slip was then poured into the mould. After much fettling, the jug is bisqued and painted, then glazed, then graphics are applied before a final firing.

The Outcome
Seven custom, handmade jugs designed to grab the viewer’s attention, enticing one to take a closer look, not just as a water jug, but more as an art-piece. Every jug has its own unique mix of various graphics and colours.
Each jug has its own unique characteristic and personality, every face is brought to life with the use of intricate patterns and detailed images, yet there is a common goal behind them all; to draw the viewer in nearer, to intrigue, to captivate.
