The idea of re-writing the history of Montréal came up to our minds almost automatically after our four-months stay in the city. As Italian exchange students, in fact, during this period of time we have collected in first person a lot of experiences regarding the stereotyped perception of Italian people and Italian culture in North America: “errors”, misunderstandings, wrong use of Italian words and attitudes. So, what could be done to make people aware of all these mistakes?
We thought it could be interesting (and also funny) to re-interpret the history of the city, drawing information from events and people truly existed during the centuries and matching them as to create a new course of time. In that way, what would result from our project would be a new Montréal, an Italian Montréal, founded centuries ago after Giovanni Caboto’s first discovery of the Canadian territory.
