Modular Design Ethos

  • Modular Design Ethos
    Sustainable use of modular design
  • This project created by Steven John Buchanan Dyson evolved from an intensive research project into the use and management of sustainable design practice within industry. Steven found that the client often holds the pull and drive of a company to become more sustainable, and therefore procured a design to benchmark the possibilities of using a modular design ethos during the early stages of the design process. Steven designed for the footware industry as it gives a large platform for change.

This design of the shoe allows for the top canvas section to be removed from the sole which allows for the replacement of each modular component, to extend the shoes life cycle, without the need to dispose the entire shoe. Due to the nature of the divided sections, the majority of different material types are separate, this allows for easier disassembly and recycling.

n.b This project has no connection with Converse Shoe Company. Converse was used as a branding tool, to showcase the adaptability of the shoe industry.
