The central aim of the project was to explore paraphilias (mental disorders based on sexual deviations) through the disturbing and suggestive imagery. Being a very difficult subject to understand or analyse, I have tried to look at it in a thought-provoking objective way.
The book includes real stories of those, who happen to experience such deviations and an interview with sexologist Dr Amy Marsh.
The graphic elements and compositions, which defined the visual language of the book, were abstract rather than obvious, one of the examples is a set of nine glyphs that was created to represent paraphilias. The designs were based on various astronomical symbols. The idea behind it was to “create new genders” as opposed to the well-known gender symbols, which also represent planets Mars and Venus. I wanted the viewer/reader to question the normal conventional perception of a sexual act, which usually involves only males and/or females.
The book is meant to suggest rather than to represent, and, to ask questions rather than to give answers.
