Meat transport in Uganda

In March 2008. i was in Mbale, Uganda. Sitting on the terrace of my room, i had a good view to a very common sight: a meat transporting pickup truck. A usual way to transport meat, the direct line from farmers to consumers in Uganda. Meat doesn’t often travel a long distance, so the ways that the meat travel to it’s final destination has not been changed or modernised either. Eating meat that has been transported in this way, usually contaminated by flies and dust can lead to food poisoning and diseases like Cholera, Typhoid, Dysentery and TB among others.
Government had brought a resolution in 2008. that all the butcheries which doesn’t meet the proposed hygiene standards should be closed, but as i have seen there is a little control in the distant regions in the country. Due to high prices and low availability of the product, the meat is sold in few minutes, so actually there can be almost no control over the standards proposed by the law.
