A friend came to me, asking if I would like the opportunity to enter a design contest. He told me it was for a brand new club at Purdue University centering around marine biology. The contest was to have a logo and T-shirt design for their staff & members. The theme was based around ocean or ocean life. Beyond that I had no other restraints. My friend also told me that if my design was chosen, I would get a free t-shirt with my design on it and the chance of working with them in the future if they needed any other designs.
I got to work right away and came up with a simplified version of a dolphin for a pictogram they could use on various other products or handouts. The blues I used help go along with their theme of ocean life. For the shirt, as you'll see below, I used a slightly different dolphin illustration and made it look as if they were jumping out of the water and swimming across the shirt.
When I was finished with the design I sent it off to my friend so he could turn it in to the proper channels. He seemed to really like it and thought it would fit great with the new club and it's members. Unfortunately, he told me that the officers of the club had already picked one of their own designs instead so my work wouldn't be seen by anyone else. Though I was upset, this project gave me experience for working with a real client instead of school projects.
