PHILADELPHIA-
Society Hill Synagogue is pleased to announce the opening of our October exhibition, Marc Salz: Talmudic Abstractions. Salz’s abstractions are based on the structure of the Talmud, the book of Rabbinic commentaries on Jewish law. The format of the Talmud begins with a main central text, accompanied by satellite-like side arguments made by scholars and rabbis that wind around the original text. Salz creates a visual Midrash where words are transformed into contradictory colors and images. Salz creates active visual discussions between each panel. At times the conversation is harmonious, but frequently a low murmur of dissent can be heard, accented by a shout, as color and shape debate and create a fluid and open-ended exchange of ideas.

I believe that today, with all the world's contradictory views and opinions, the Talmud's presentation of differing points of view on a subject is not just an abstract symbol but a real example for contemporary life. The Talmud's format does not offer passage into a single ideal but instead presents us with the joys of argumentation and how we can still be mindful of the central way where there is hope for agreement.
