Our design brief was to develop an interactive toy for children which incorporated repeating wooden elements.
We worked with our 7 year old co-designer, Elliot, to determine a direction. He loved moving parts and assemblies, so we worked towards engaging him with a mechanical toy.
Marble Mountain uses 13 oscillating pieces to move a marble up the hill as you turn the crank. Once at the top, a ramp returns the marble back to the base and you start over. Parallels can be drawn to the Myth of Sisyphus, although this toy is fun instead of depressing.
Our chosen path proved to be an enormous technical challenge, one which required several iterations and hundreds of hours of work. We gave him the toy when we were finished and he was absolutely fascinated with its motion.
