For the past six months I have been working on creating a map from Playa El Tunco El Salvador, as part of the class of Independent Studies at the Escuela de Comunicación Mónica Herrera in El Salvador and this is the final result of all these months of work.
This Map of Activities and Curiosities of Playa El Tunco covers the completion of illustrated tourist maps, which include recommendations on the activities and curious sights of Playa El Tunco. Its function is to guide, based on illustrations and the help of information design, all those of an adventurous and curious nature who want to know the beach and its stories (based on recommendations of tourists and legends told by locals).
The final map was printed in two versions: one for international tourists (in english, since most of the international tourists come from english speaking countries) and the second, for national tourists (in spanish). The two maps are printed on both sides and include a belt which describes the use and application of the map. At the front of the map you can find information on the range of activities you can do during the day, while at the back, you can find recommendations for the night.
To find the information needed to include in the map, I had to go through a long process of observations, surveys and interviews in the locality. Through the observations I obtained all the visual information needed to create the map. The surveys yielded important data on the most popular and sought after activities by tourists (international as well as national). The interviews were the primary source of information on recreation and curious aspects of life in El Tunco.
Playa El Tunco is off the Carretera del Litoral in the Municipio of Tamanique in La Libertad, El Salvador, just 40 minutes away from the city of San Salvador and 50 minutes from the airport. (Map taken from Google Maps, 2012)
To obtain the exact location of each of the restaurants and hotels, as well as stores and tourist information spots, I had to use a GPS to mark each one and then introduce the data into Google Earth. ©Rachel Katstaller, 2012.
