- Design Rationale
magazine identity & readership
The magazine that I have designed is Men’s Focus. The content is geared towards men, aged 18-45, who are interested in politics, the military, and outdoorsmanship. This magazine will be broad in topics but will always have a sophisticated but down-to-earth feel to the design.
magazine visual identity
I intend to convey a modern, clean look with the magazine design. The magazine uses minimal fonts, only several faces, to convey a sense of consistency. The colors and typefaces, when applicable, are blockier, bolder, and, in a sense, “manly.” This will express the idea of appealing to the modern man.
article visual identity
I intended to convey a sense of militarism but with a modern, technological edge. The feature spread is nostalgic of the classic Missile Command game, but by placing picture cutouts of UAV drones, the design conveys a better sense of what is going on in the article. Furthermore, the uses consistent colors amongst the feature and jump spread. Also, going along with the video game theme of the feature spread, the soldier using a joystick on the first page of the jump almost looks like he is playing a video game.
article design strategy
The initial impression of the feature page gives a reminiscent design, which calls in the reader, but then jars them with the predator drones involved. The text complements this, as the Silkscreen font used goes along with the design style of classic videogames. The deck font is blocky and almost 80’s like as well, so the message of the design is still conveyed. I bring this design to the jump spread using the yellow blocks and Silkscreen drop-caps.
