MFA DAGI

This is MFA Dagi, a custom font which was commissioned for the catalog of an exhibition at The Museum of Fine Arts (Budapest, Hungary).

The design was based on Modern fonts and had started as a personal design project before it was commissioned by the museum.

The font’s weight is heavy with extreme contrasts, the character set is limited but features a rich set of discretional ligatures which was used extensively while setting the text. There was also a set of seamless pattern modules in the font as well, some based on historical samples, some matching the design of the type more closely.

Later in the making the need for a special tailored version arose as the hairlines of the original version were unsuitable to the technique the title lines were cut. The basic structure of the font was retained and the hairlines made considerably thicker. The resulting type might be called a reversed optical grade as the bigger the titles got the more robust the letterforms became.
