Metamorphosis are objects for the home.
Birds hide are stretched over geometrical forms that transform the material’s flat surface into undefined objects or sculptures.
I was inspired from taxidermy and the ways of tanning bird skin. Birds skin is a underutilized material that could be great value of, and I explored the potential to use the bird to the full. I put myself in contact with hunters, and worked with this by-product, the bird skin, but by preserving and displaying the animal it is showed respect, instead of being throwned away.
I tanned the birds skin but tanning is the process of treating skins of animals to produce leather. In the north of Iceland is the largest tanning factory in Europe, where i spent few days to learn about the process of tanning leather.
Each year around 300.000 birds are shot in Iceland and once the meat has been removed from the skin, the hide is thrown away, although there are ways to tan it like skin from most other animals. Today the hide is only used in taxidermy. Most of us have never even touched such a material, but mounted birds are usually forbidden to touch, -because they're too fragile.
While handling these objects they provoke certain feeling, but because the hide is not in its traditional shape, -birdshape, the experience is undefined and in a way wandering. -It is what you define it is.
