This illustration was made for Mastodon's "Dry Bone Valley" contest. It's a conceptual image inspired by the lyrics from the same themed song. We wanted to represent the final moments of a living creature, which in this case is represented by the organic elements (woman, flowers & plants) being consumed by a “beast”. In those moments of confusion, both creatures form a tree, which is about to die as a unit in the infinite space of a dry and lifeless valley (represented by the white background). In an ironic way, everything that's happening creates a very powerful and mystical image or situation, inspired by the music in the song.

The illustration was worked by hand with pencil, ink and pencil colors, and then it was detailed and finished in Adobe Photoshop with different brushes and tools. Hope you like it. Read Less
