I am currently creating work that explores the dynamic struggle between
childhood and adulthood through a universal perspective that does not rely
on my own memories. My latest project, Like the Lost Boys, utilizes popular
toys from my generation’s childhood to evoke a nostalgic sense of inner-
happiness, contrasted with the message to “Never fucking grow up. Never
fucking give up.” I believe that children have the truest sense of self and
purest worldview, and I desperately cling on to the wild and unashamed
self-suredness and creativity of childhood. I strive to evoke that sense of
unashamed self-suredness and unbridled creativity in my audience by
arousing a nostalgic yearning for childhood through our “shared culture” of
commercial toys and retro popular culture.
This project was also very much about the process of experimenting with materials and form. I crafted a table from acrylic, and also airbrushed onto paper and acrylic to achieve this final form.
