4th Year Minor Project
Once a general direction was chosen from concept sketching and researching materials, the sketch idea was mocked up with a rough model. This model was built to test proportions, lighting through veneer, and to get a physical model of the light in a short amount of time.

Once the rough model and sketches were done, the next phase was Solidworks. Here, the dimensions were fine tuned, details were determined such as wiring, mechanical features, and overall construction. The model was detailed to a point where it conveys the design intent and could be built by a fabricator.
Once the design was determined, the final model needed to be fabricated. This model was a full scale working prototype. All wiring and lighting fixtures were to be the real thing and could be considered the first prototype to be built.
Final Model
The final model was constructed over a period of a month. The bottom plate was fabricated out of 1/4" steel plate. The connection details are 2" stock steel tube. The wood was Bird's Eye Maple with a channel cut through the middle to run wires out of sight. The light source was LED light strips. The top piece was designed to look like a solid piece of wood when the light is off. When turned on, the top lights through the veneer adding a element of surprise to the light.
