Lighting Plan van Traa Advocates Rotterdam

With the renovation of the office for van Traa advocates I got to do the lightingplan for a complete story of the building containing 5 boardrooms and the office canteen.

The renovation architect wanted to create an extraordinary office space and tried to avoid the “standard”  solutions for office furniture, decoration etc. that’s why he hired me to do the lightingplan giving me the assignment to create a lighting plan that was both functional and creative/decorative.
The office should have the “corporate and business-look” but with a luxury and somewhat homely touch.
And because the advocates firm mostly takes on cases in intenational trade, transport and insurance there clients are for the biggest part to be found at the Rotterdam Harbors. The raw industrial looks of the harbors should be a theme for the lighting and decoration plan of the office.
To achieve this I descided to avoid using the standard TL-light as much as possible and use a more “friendly”  and “raw”  light and shape for the lightingfixtures.
Lighting plans for offices are often made pure for function and according to ruling standards and guidelines.
Most of the time this results in the use of very boring but funtional “hidden” lighting fixtures that are build into the walls and ceilings of the rooms, very functional but not very friendly or “cosy”.
So I deliberately chose to make the fixtures in this plan “visible” by using design fixtures that should be seen!

Because the canteen and corridor leading from the canteen to the boardrooms was one big open space I wanted something to happen in that space. Make a big gesture to fill the empty space. I used a large amount of small glass hanginglamps that were like a swarm of lights floating through the space.
So I used 44 “Lights without darkness” by Artecnica and hung them in straight lines thourghout the corridors and above the small tables in the canteen. From a distace you see one playfull cloud of lights but coming closer you see the straight lined structure in the pattern.

Together with the architect I helped to create a corner from long oakwood tables above which I hung Apollo Lampshades in combination with fixture “Diapason” by Kreon as exta support for the functional lighting.

The Apollo’s are also hung in the large boardrooms, but then without the “high top” (see picture above) and they were combined with  Downlighters that were build in the ceiling. The downlighters can be put on as functional work and reading light, but when you turn them of there’s a nice low work-light coming from the apollo lampshades  to write by whilst looking at the big LCD screen used for presentations.
The small boardrooms were completed with the “workshoplamp” fom HK living, to give them that industral harbor look. In the drawing of the lighting plan undeneath the colored points represent the different fixtures used in this plan.
The Project and Lighting plan were realised in coöperation with Project & Design Light Rotterdam  http://www.pend.nl/  , Architectenbureau Kühne&co www.kuhneco.nl  , Zeggelaar installatietechniek  http://www.zeggelaar.nl/  , Bureau Yben
