Life is a photo series of 4 prints symbolising the way biological life arises from inorganic matter through natural processes, and the method by which life on Earth arose.
Through the use of paint and chemicals a “primeval soup" is created that represents the organic molecules that would combine in evermore-complex ways until they form coacervate droplets.
These droplets, like the paint, "grow" by fusion with other droplets, and "reproduce" through fission into daughter droplets, and so create a primitive metabolism in which the outcome is solely dependable on the balance between the molecules represented by the chemicals and the paint. This balance resembles those factors that promote "cell integrity" for cells too survive, and those that do not become extinct.
The photographs are shot in natural light to incorporate the action of sunlight, which is necessary too create an oxygen-less atmosphere in which organic molecules can be created. Oxygen prevents the synthesis of certain organic compounds that are necessary building blocks for the evolution of life. Read Less
