When I saw three old wood levels at an estate sale, I had the idea to build a "level table." There was something inherently interesting about making a flat surface out of objects designed to make flat surfaces.

For the next five years, I collected these levels from flea markets, antique stores and estate sales. And with a few helpful contributions from keen-eyed family members, I amassed this collection of twenty one levels.
The first challenge was getting all of the levels in place to make just the right shape. It was like solving a three dimensional puzzle with pieces that were never designed to fit together. With plenty of trial and error, the levels ended up perfectly arranged.
With a little clean up on each piece, some wood glue, and pipe clamps, the table took shape. A final coat of polyurethane helped to protect the surface and bring out the beautiful color and detail in the wood, hardware, and markings.
