Letter Society Projects 4 and 5: Restaurant

Project 4 part I: Restaurant Logo and mood board

Hello Behance! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday hopefully filled with much food and family. I myself ventured back to my hometown of Baltimore, Maryland and had a lovely time. My excitement to go home inspired my logo design for a crab restaurant turned jazz bar called Steamy Blues.
If Maryland is known for one thing (besides The Wire and Ray Lewis), its definitely our wonderfully delicious Maryland Blue Crabs.

For this design I wanted to do an icon that could stand on its own and then a simple word mark that could tie it together. When I think of jazz, I think of my favorite part of the music; the bass line. I started with the bass clef and gave it a (crabby) personality of its own. I also wanted to use mostly flat color with a bit of spice in the claws to show the beautiful coloring of Maryland Blues before they are steamed.

As far as the mood board, I wanted to use images that have the perfect balance of laid back crab/seafood joint mixed with classy jazz. Somewhere you can go that captures the artsy culture and awesome food that make Baltimore such an awesome place to call home.

Of course, there will be part II of this project and I fully anticipate some changes to the logo, mostly to the type so we shall see where we end up!

Project 5: Restaurants Part II Steamy Blues

Hey y’all! Here is part II of Steamy Blues! My menu is a simple single-fold that would hypothetically be laminated since, after all, this is a crab place at heart. I used the style of the logo, using the outline and fill staggered to create some added interest but keeping the overall design pretty simple. The back of the menu features a list of (my favorite) local beers from Maryland.
For my second collateral item, I chose to explore environmental branding. What I like about certain brands is the ability of their icon to stand alone and I felt I had a pretty good opportunity to do that here. I used the same typefaces to create type compositions while using the outline from the icon to complement the overall atmosphere.
