  • Case Study
  • This is where the cover started; a simple sketch made in DeviantArt's Muro. The most important step in any design process is having a thought out concept you want to execute before diving into the details. For the cover I chose the concept of a lemon being one of the fundamental shapes of design to give the reader the idea that Lemonade magazine & design are 2 peas in a pod.
  • Now I've taken the concept and transfered to Maxon Cinema 4D. I've set up a studio lighting scene, modeled the basic shapes out, and began to experiment a bit with their appearance. Here I have some prominent colors in art & design expressed against a soft yellow background to give the sense that the lemon is illuminating the atmosphere.
  • In this step I've concluded that with the preview colors it was hard to draw full attention to the lemon, so I've made the cube & pyramid translucent and inclosed within a grid of their own shape. Not only does this make the bright yellow lemon more prominent, but the refraction on the shapes gives a nice effect.
  • Now that the focal point has been established, I've began to add some supporting details to make the composition more aesthetic.
  • Now I've added more supporting details, established a hierarchy with them, and balanced out their colors. The shattering shapes begin to make the piece dynamic, but more will be done to provide the composition with energy in Photoshop. Throughout the entire composition I've used only triangles, pyramids, and cubes to give the piece a strong design backbone, and used artsy colors & refractions to give it the edge.
  • Now i've added some text to the composition, and it's time to begin editing in photoshop to finalize the composition.
  • I've began to do some lighting adjustments in this step to make things a bit more dramatic.
  • In this step I began to add some fine supporting details surrounding the lemon. These draw more attention to the focal point.
  • Here I added some lightning bolts in to give the piece some more energy & make the composition more dynamic. I think the electricity ties in well with the lemon, because of their sourness.
  • To add a more dynamic feel I added some splashing of lemonade around the text.
  • And finally after some slight adjustments to the overall positioning of the elements & resizing of the text to make the composition more balanced we're finished!
