The title, Le Linge Sale, comes from the
French saying, “Il faut laver son linge sale en famille. Its idiomatic
equivalent in English is “Don’t air your dirty laundry in public.”
The purpose of the project was to air the fashion industry’s
dirty laundry, its toxic manufacturing practices. The visual
solution tells the story of the production of a dress (from fiber
to finished product) in the vernacular of the fashion industry,
a cocktail dress. From a distance the form engages the shopper, but as
she approaches the real story behind the dress is revealed. Each tier
exposes a toxic process—the use of pesticides/insecticides in cotton
production; the contamination of water sources during fabric dyeing; the
harsh working conditions for garment factory employees; and the tons of
discarded clothing occupying landfills.
