For this project I was inspired by two concepts: tribe masks and Alebrijes.
Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures.
I wanted to create masks that appeared as if they were made by some imaginary tribe without technological tools so they couldn’t be created to perfection.
When trying to develop the Alebrije character concepts, I realized that by cutting random shapes out of wood scraps and paper I could created a wide variety of custom characters just by making different compositions .
I think everyone is able to create just by using imagination. That is why I left random shapes lying on the floor in hope that the viewer will create custom characters and interact with my artwork feeling part of it.
