  • The challenge was to create a unique cover for LWL magazine, illustrating one of this year’s top five films. I chose to illustrate Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman. My finished outcome reflects primarily the beauty of the character, yet remains slightly dark natured. I wanted to relate to the evil that takes over the white swan, which I have shown through the subtle transaction of white to black, as the character changes. The fractured, angular drawing style was taken from, what I felt, the most relevant scene in the film where she stabs herself with a piece of shattered mirror. It is a key point in the film in terms of showing her being taken over by the evil black swan within. The hand drawn type was created to compliment the beauty of the character and to bring the design to life through colour. The colour also refers to blood, and the S is subtly in the shape of a swan.
